A Little Fat is Healthy?
A new study in all the papers today says that people who are slightly overweight are less likely to die than either obese people or those of normal weight.
The study was conducted by the National Cancer Institute and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, using a model that has been used for predicting cancer risk.
An increased risk of death from obesity was only seen among the heaviest 8 percent of the population.
Reaction to the study has been mixed, with some saying it shows that the nation’s obsession with weight has gone too far; others simply do not believe the findings that seem to imply the well-used Body Mass Index needs adjusting.
However this pans out, it’s certainly no reason to gain weight, or to stop trying to lose weight if you fall in that high-risk category. But it is something intersting to think about, how little we really know about what is healthy and what is not.
