Colorful Diet, Better Diet

September 22nd, 2005 by Y.G.

A short article on eDiets.com caught my eye today. Titled “Why A Colorful Diet Is A Better Diet”, it explains this by focusing on why eating brown rice is better than choosing its white version:

A healthy rule of thumb? Don’t eat anything white! This applies to bread, rice and grains. In a general sense, if something is white, it’s been bleached and is less than complete.

For example, white rice vs. brown rice. Both white and brown rice are good sources of nutrition. But, I prefer brown rice to white. White rice has had the bran, husk and germ removed and that’s where all the natural nutrition is stored!

This may not seem like a novelty, but I’ve often found out that it was true. First, colorful foods are more appealing, period: when we go buy fruits, sure the colorful ones look better than their versions who probably have never seen the real light of the summer sun. (Of course, this may not be true in our times of chemical enhancements, but our eyes and bodies still think this way.) Second, processed foods aren’t that good, so indeed, brown rice would be better than white, and so it goes too for many grains and other foods.

When it comes to weight loss, I’ve also found out that not only did these foods bear more nutrients, but they’d also make me feel fuller, sooner. Therefore, if it’s good for my health and able to prevent me from gobbling down food and eating too much… there’s really not much risk to take by not giving in to processed foods anymore!

Now if only restaurants could come up with brown rice too, and waitressed not look at me as if I was some sort of alien when I ask for veggies instead of white rice or fries with my meat…
