Don’t Try This Recipe At Home
May 22nd, 2006 by Marsha James
A Japanese television network called Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) has apologized to viewers who became sick after cooking and eating a recipe that was aired on one of their shows.
The recipe called for a diet of white kidney beans mixed with rice. However the beans had to be roasted for roughly three minutes and then ground up into a white power before being mixed in.
Viewers are now being urged to not follow the recipe because nearly 160 of them became violently ill with symptoms that included vomiting and diarrhoea.
It turns out that while safe to eat the beans become toxic if not properly heated. The food poisoning was cause by a protein called lectin.
