Eating Out

July 18th, 2007 by Lynn Little

Going out to eat can sabotage any diet. It’s best to be as prepared as possible before heading out to a restaurant. A little homework will help to ensure that you can enjoy eating out and not falling off track.

A lot of restaurants offer a special selection of healthy food choices. Usually printed on the menu will be the caloric intake of these dishes and possibly the fat content. Choosing to eat at a restaurant with low calorie menu items is a smart choice when you are watching what you eat. Sometimes when we eat out with a group of friends who are not dieting, then the choice of restaurant may not be so diet friendly.

If you know ahead of time where you are going for dinner, check the restaurant’s website to see if they have the nutritional value listed of their menu selections. This will be a great help in knowing which dishes are really bad for your diet and which ones are ok. If the restaurant does not list their nutritional information, there are still things you can do once you arrive to eat that will help keep you on your dieting track.

If a dish looks good, ask your server what is in the dish. By the ingredients you will be able to tell if it is something that has a lot of calories. You might even ask the server if the restaurant has a nutritional value brochure. If your server knows you are watching what you eat, then she might have some suggestions of low calorie dishes.

If you are having no luck with your server, then it might be up to you to decipher which dishes are more diet friendly. Salads are always a good choice, just be mindful of the salad dressing. Anything broiled is usually a good indication of lower calories. If a dish is broiled and has a fancy sauce, you can either ask for sauce on the side or to go light on the sauce.

Eating out is always fun since it is someone else doing the cooking and cleaning up those messy dishes. When dieting you can eat out and enjoy your favorite restaurants with a little planning.
