Break The Monotony: Try New Things!

August 28th, 2007 by Y.G.

Beginning an exercise program out of the blue is never easy. Most of us are not born-athletes, and to be honest, most of us are even persuaded (or want to be?) that they’re not cut for exercising at all. Alas, it’s not like we really have many options in that regard: if we want to lose the weight and keep it off for good, food remains the major thing to control, but exercise still does play an important part whether we want it or not. After all, if it comes down to eating like a bird for the rest of our lives or eating a little more simply because we’re burning extra calories through a little bit of cardio and developed muscles, what sounds best? To me, it’s definitely the latter.

However, to do so, we need to sail past a well-known obstacle: boredom. Every type of exercise isn’t for everyone. I, for instance, love strength-training and running in the park right after daybreak, but pedaling on a stationary bike in a gym bores me to death. This said, I need my cardio like everyone else, so the other day, I decided to try something new: a body combat class.

See, I am a student and a worker. I’ve spent quite some time during the present summer break actually reading and revising to prepare my upcoming school year. I could really do with something to relieve the stress. A class where you spend one hour bouncing while performing karate and kick-boxing moves on a speedy music with an instructor apparently on crack encouraging you to yell “KILL!” with each finishing move sounded particularly appealing.

And it was. I loved that class. I had fun all the way. I sweated like there was no tomorrow (I’m naturally not a heavy sweater). It was worth all the times I climbed on the recumbent bike or the elliptical machine. It had managed to break my previous, monotonous stride, and reacquaint me with cardio in a way I hadn’t thought possible at first.

Unfortunately, like with every other gym, I’ll have to pay a monthly fee if I want to attend those classes. On the other hand, if such a type of exercise was out there just waiting for me, maybe there’s another one, less expensive, waiting for me as well. And surely there’s one waiting for you too!

So don’t let boredom and old, dull habits break your will to exercise. Don’t hesitate to try new things now and then. Maybe you won’t like them, and maybe it will be the proverbial light-bulb moment. Mind and body both likes regular little changes, and seem to strive on such things.
