The Serving Size Challenge

October 2nd, 2007 by Lynn Little

Have you ever noticed the serving sizes when reading the nutrition labels? For example, a usual serving is one half of a cup. How much is that really though in a bowl? Sometimes we may think we are just getting one serving of a food but in reality it might be two or more.

When dieting, those portions are paramount for success. So, for a week measure your food to get an idea of how much a serving of a certain food looks on your dinner plate. Measuring food can be time consuming and who really has the time to do it everyday? But getting a clear idea of just how much food is a 1/2 or 1 cup will ensure that you will be eating the right portion sizes in the future.

You might be surprised at just how little or how much a serving of certain foods look. If anything, it will surely be a learning experience. For me I know I always think of an actual serving of ice cream food should be more ice cream. It makes me stop and think that I really need to watch my serving portions for foods that I love and are usually lax on when it comes to serving size.

Guesstimating a serving size especially on treats can sabotage any diet. Start measuring foods for an accurate serving size of your favorite foods so you can enjoy those foods while staying on your diet.
