Exercise: How to Maintain Interest
April 12th, 2008 by Kathy DoveThe very word “exercise” makes many cringe. It reeks…work!. Add exercise to an already busy schedule and it seems like yet, another task to include.
Our body needs exercise in order to be healthy. So why do so many people procrastinate or start an exercise program and then lose interest quickly? Interest is the key. Exercise doesn’t have to be a chore, but a replenishing experience. We are drawn to what makes us feel better and if we find something to look forward to, instead of dread, we are likely to stick with it. But, it takes finding what suits your personal preference.
I have a friend who always wanted to tap dance. As a child, she never got to take classes, but at 50 years old she bought a pair of tap shoes and this has become her form of both exercise and fulfilling a dream. She doesn’t lose interest in exercising because she’s interested in the type of exercise that works for her.
There are many ways to make exercise more enjoyable:
* Enjoy a game of basketball or badminton with your children or spouse
* Try inline skating
* Listen to music or audio books while walking
* Take a hike - literally, in surrounds of nature
* Swimming is soothing and great exercise
* Ride a bike
* Get a buddy involved
* Jump your way to health - try a mini or large trampoline
Interest is the key to sticking with any exercise program. Find what works for you and be consistent. Your body will love you for it!
