Vitamin B-12 and Weight Loss

Posted on May 13th, 2008 by Irene Bellamy in Diet Logs

Vitamin B12  as a weight loss supplement?  Some people say it is good for losing weight because  it speeds your metabolism. But really  B12, though it does help metabolize fat and protein, it’s not in large enough quantities where it actually causes weight loss. Scientists, doctors and nutritionist state that the weight loss in people getting vitamin B12 shots and supplements is due to the fact that these people are eating healthier and are more active because they are trying to lose weight and not due to their increased intake of B12. What B12 will do is increase your energy levels, which might help you exercise more.
Vitamin B12 is better to get from food in your diet than in supplement form.  So if you want to increase your B12 intake to increase your energy level, try getting some of these foods into your daily diet:

  • Mollusks – This includes clams, oysters, scallops and mussels.
  • Breakfast cereals fortified with B12
  • Yogurt
  • Salmon
  • Eggs
  • Turkey
  • Lamb
  • Lean beef

So bottom line seems to be that Vitamin B12 can increase your energy, but will not on it’s own take the weight off. Alas, the only way to really lose weight and keep it off is a healthy diet and exercising.

So B-12 is good for energy. What about 5-hour energy shots or 6-hour power. Are they a healthy way to stay energized?
