The South Beach Diet

May 24th, 2008 by Brooke Hart

Out of complete curiosity, I started looking into potential diets that you could be on.  And, of course, the South Beach Diet couldn’t be left out.  After looking into the concept, I realized… this is one of the first diets that isn’t a Fad diet.  In fact, I wouldn’t call it a diet at all…. which I truly love.

So, here’s the concept behind the South Beach Diet.  It works by changing your lifestyle of eating by giving you alternatives to what you should eat and what will work best for you.  Typically, it is divided into 3 phases.

Phase 1:  Clean out the closets.  This means going through and finding all of the things that are bad for you.  Typically, they will contain bad fats and bad carbohydrates that won’t allow you to loose the weight that you want.  Things such as candy, sugars, pop and even butter should all definitely be taken out.

Phase 2:  This is the toughest phase, because it means transitioning over.  Basically, you have to take everything that you eat and find substitutes for healthier things.  For example, if you love that fried chicken…it’s time to switch it for baked.  Even then, you have to be careful of the ingredients that you are putting in it and what it may have.  There are South Beach Diet recipe books to help with this phase…as well as lists that will help you to find the ‘healthy stuff.’

Phase 3:  Add back in the stuff you love.  This is the part I love about the South Beach diet.  It doesn’t prohibit you from eating what you like and make you suffer in order to loose the weight.  You can keep what you started to eat with the new lifestyle, then work towards adding in the extra… like chocolate.  Of course, this is also given with recommendation in order to make sure that you don’t over indulge and that you keep a balance with the type of chocolate that you have.

I’m officially calling this the magical diet… actually, it’s more of a way of changing your lifestyle.  And, it’s definitely one that the only thing you can “loose” is the actual weight.
